Alicia Deluga, Program and Marketing Manager for the Sasaki Foundation, I sat down with Nathan Phillips and Mary Brady from Sasaki Foundation Design Grants project From Energy Security to Energy Shift, in Boston & Beyond. Their project will test and develop methods for Boston and other municipalities to effectively inventory and build household electric capacity across diverse housing stock and communities, applying lessons learned from last fall’s Merrimack Valley gas disaster.
Alicia Deluga, Program and Marketing Manager for the Sasaki Foundation, sat down with Elena Clarke and Laila Fozouni. Their project is called Designing Shelters for Dignity, and they believe that everyone has the fundamental right to safe and accessible housing, though they acknowledge this will take a massive cultural shift and in the meantime many without homes are suffering in dehumanizing and degrading living conditions. Elena and Laila believe design and community involvement can significantly improve the well-being of individuals residing in homeless shelters, at very little cost.
This week, the Sasaki Foundation published a report with compelling research from the inaugural cohort of the Sasaki Foundation Design Grants, which summarizes five innovative and impactful community-based projects. The projects address a range of challenges from fostering difficult conversations around managed retreat from seawater rise in East Boston, to supporting women of color seeking to break into the tech sector workforce in Roxbury, to designing inclusive experiences for low-vision visitors to an art exhibition in Watertown, to tackling inequities in affordable housing opportunities, to addressing water quality in the Charles River.
The Sasaki Foundation announced today the winning teams for its 2019 Sasaki Foundation Design Grants. The Design Grants are an annual competition to showcase projects that support and drive interdisciplinary innovation and empower our local communities. The Sasaki Foundation also selected two additional finalists to receive Community Grants, to participate alongside the research cohort in the Incubator at Sasaki with a shared goal of creating change through the power of design.

These seven teams will pitch to a panel of judges on Wednesday, June 5, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Incubator at Sasaki, 64 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA, an event sponsored by Columbia Construction. The Design Grants are an annual competition to showcase projects that support and drive interdisciplinary innovation and empower our local communities.

Check out our newly released 2023-2024 Design Grants Research Report to learn more about our fifth cohort's work, offering innovative solutions to address food resilience, access to childcare, environmental justice, community infrastructure, and gentrification, with an ongoing impact in Greater Boston and beyond.
In June 2023, the Sasaki Foundation awarded $52,500 to five community-based research teams, who spent the next ten months advancing and implementing projects that promote equity in design. The team members also met with Sasaki designers who provided design guidance and a deep breadth of knowledge about solutions to the challenges they faced.
The Sasaki Foundation continued to focus on community, housing, transit, health and wellbeing, and climate, under the theme of Shared Voices: Charting a Course for Community Action. This theme recognizes that multiple futures are at stake, and we can make a difference by acting now. The projects are already having a significant impact in their respective communities and will remain as open source research with links to the project websites, to help communities that may be tackling similar issues. Metrics highlighting the impact of these projects are included in the report.
Through our research grants, the Sasaki Foundation seeks to harness the power of design thinking to promote equity and empower local communities, tackling global challenges through local action. Our 2024-2025 Design Grants cohort is hard at work, and we launched the 2025 Design Grants call for proposals in February, with applications due on April 24 at noon. The program will continue to provide teams with access not only to designers at Sasaki—an award-winning international design firm—but also to the Sasaki Foundation's broad network of startups, designers and planners, community groups, artists, civic leaders, and entrepreneurs.
